Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag 2019

Title Template (3)

I’m pretty sure I say this every year I do this tag, but… How are we halfway through the year already?? Plus, I am way late to the party this year with the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag! I always love looking back to see what I’ve read, as I tend to forget a lot of it! Anyways, I have been super behind on blogging lately, and I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but I’m excited for the 2019 Mid-Year freak out!

Best Book You’ve Read so Far in 2019:

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, and haven’t had any books that were just super amazing lately. But, I did have a couple new favorites toward the beginning of the year! Radio Silence by Alice Oseman was just wonderful and full of good friendships. Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone discussed OCD in such a respectful and realistic way, plus the characters were so, so relatable. Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi also had sweet, relatable, college-age characters that I easily fell in love with.

Best Sequel You’ve Read so Far:

Definitely Obsidio and Memento! I actually haven’t read many sequels yet this year, which is a bit unusual for me, but anything considered part of the Illuminae Files is bound to be amazing! Obsidio was an epic addition to the series, and brought in new characters, old flames, and super sci-fi action. I was also fortunate to have received a copy of Memento, and boy, it did not disappoint!

New Releases You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To:

  • To Best the Boys by Mary Weber: This totally reminds me of The Testing!
  • Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell: I saw somewhere it was similar to The Lunar Chronicles and I was sold.
  • Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi: I LOVED Shatter Me, but I have zero knowledge of what happened in Restore Me, so I need a reread before continuing.

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year:

Easily Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi and Rebel by Marie Lu. I have both on pre-order and am eagerly (not necessarily patiently) awaiting their arrivals! So many more months left to wait!…

Biggest Disappointment:

I’m likely going to offend someone in saying this, but Aurora Rising. I adore the Illuminae Files and obviously Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman are destined to write together, but I had such high expectations for this book and they just weren’t met. Though, I still have maybe a hundred pages left, so I could change my mind?

Biggest Surprise:

43204703

I’d have to say A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. There was sooo much hype around this book, that I was a little worried about reading it despite my interest in fairy tale retellings. Luckily, I was not disappointed! The story was not at all what I expected, but it was wonderful nonetheless! I am excited for the sequel to come out in January!

Favorite New Author:

Easily Mary H.K. Choi. I just loved Emergency Contact and I cannot wait for Permanent Record! She has become an auto-buy author for me!

Newest Fictional Crush:

Grey from A Curse so Dark and Lonely! He was very mysterious and fascinating and incredibly kind to both Rhen and Harper. His loyalty is unmatched, plus he was strong and a good fighter!

Newest Favorite Character:

I loved Penny in Emergency Contact. I could easily relate to her as a college student and as someone trying to find their way in the world. But Sam was also really amazing. He loves baking and movies and just wants to be happy.

Book That Made You Cry:

I am not a crier, but I came pretty close during Obsidio

Book That Made You Happy:

This slump has put me in a bit of a “meh” mood toward books, but I really enjoyed my audio reread of the remainder of the Percy Jackson series! I have found that it’s really fun to revisit old favorites!

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation:

This is not really a book to film adaptation, but I loved Aladdin! I actually didn’t watch the original Aladdin until I was older, but I think it gave me more appreciation for the story! The new adaptation was really good, and captured the original characters and settings wonderfully!

Favorite Post You Have Written This Year:

I think my two I Heart Characters posts were my favorite! I wrote two, one about Joey from A Thousand Perfect Notes, and one about Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series. Dani at Perspective of a Writer hosts the I Heart Characters meme, and I love her passion for characters and participating is always super fun (when I have the time)!

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought so Far:

Probably either Aurora Rising or The Crimes of Grindelwald: The Original Screenplay.

Books You Need to Read by the End of the Year:

As usual, there are so many, so here is a list!

  • Restore Me and Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi
  • The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G. Drews (it’s on it’s way right now!)
  • Red Rising by Pierce Brown
  • To Best the Boys by Mary Weber
  • and whatever catches my eye!

How has your year been so far? Have you found any new favorite books? Which new releases are you most looking forward to?

  1. Awww JoBeth! I love your answers. I am so glad that you loved your I Heart Character posts. I think those are always the best… I may just be a fangirl at heart. I am reading A Curse so Dark and Lonely right now and am totally failing for Grey! He’s so deadpan. I love it! ❤️

  2. Radio Silence sounds so good and one I think I’ll really enjoy so I’m particularly excited to get to that one! Same for Emergency Contact which I’ve heard so much about!
I’ve been in a slump as well, for this last year or so, but thankfully it’s over and I’m back to reading now. Hope the same can happen for you too – slumps suck!
Loved reading this post & hope you have a great rest of the year 🙂
